The Quick 3

Ask these quick questions to hit the major themes of the film.

1. Stealing. Why do you think God commands us not to steal things that aren’t ours? When was the last time you took something that didn't belong to you?

  • Abis Mal and his friends stole things that didn't belong to them. Aladdin stole from Abis Mal in order to give generously to the poor. Jafar and Iago weren't afraid to take things from others. In Exodus 20, God gives us the Ten Commandments. In verse 15, one of the commandments says, “you must not steal”.

2. Revenge. Who is someone who hurt you recently? How might you repay them with a blessing?

  • Jafar was motivated to get revenge on Aladdin and everyone else who caused him to be trapped in a genie bottle. Getting "revenge" refers to hurting someone who hurt you in order to get even with them. God's Word encourages us to respond much differently when someone hurts us. 1 Peter 3:9 says, "Don’t repay evil for evil. Don’t retaliate with insults when people insult you. Instead, pay them back with a blessing. That is what God has called you to do, and he will grant you his blessing."

3. Integrity. Have you ever tried to do the right thing, but ended up being all alone in your decision?

  • The Genie tells Aladdin, "that's the thing about doing the right thing. Sometimes you do it by yourself." Aladdin is trying to do the right thing, but he feels alone and he feels all alone in his decision. Integrity is doing the right thing, even when it’s hard. It can be really hard to do the right thing when you're doing it by yourself.

1. If you had a magic lamp, what would your 3 wishes be?

4. Even though Iago made mistakes in the past, Aladdin was willing to forgive Iago and even have a healthy relationship with him in the future. Aladdin still wanted for Iago to receive the proper consequences for his mistakes, but he believed the best in Iago. Ephesians 4:32 says, "Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you." God forgives every sin and every bad decision you have ever made. Are you willing to forgive others who hurt you? How much must God love you, since He is eager to forgive all of your sin?

5. Throughout the movie, Iago must decide to either support Jafar or Aladdin. Jafar was his longtime friend, but Aladdin recently showed him kindness and protection. In the end, Iago decided to support Aladdin in order to defeat Jafar. Have you ever had to decide to show support between two people? How did you decide which person was best to support?

Minute By Minute Guide

Use this break down of the entire movie in addition to the “After the Movie” discussion guide. Great for repeat viewings.

:06 Iago sings a song about how he will look out for himself. He's saying that he'll make decisions that benefit him before helping others. His perspective is very selfish.  Selfishness is caring more about yourself than you care about others. Have you ever made selfish decisions? How can you stop to think of others before yourself?

:15 Aladdin is keeping a secret from Jasmine, refusing to tell her that he's going to defend Iago. Jasmine even asks him directly if he's keeping anything from her, but he doesn't admit the truth. Why is it hard to tell someone the truth sometimes? How often do you keep secrets and tell lies to your friends and family?

:23 Abis Mal uses his first wish for treasure and riches. Abis Mal and Jafar are both obsessed with getting more and more power and money. This shows how greedy their hearts are. Greed is having a selfish desire for money and toys. God warns us about greed in 1 Timothy 6:10: "For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. And some people, craving money, have wandered from the true faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows." Why do you think greed is so destructive? When have you been greedy in your life?

:30 The Genie tells Aladdin, "that's the thing about doing the right thing. Sometimes you do it by yourself." Aladdin is trying to do the right thing, but he feels alone and he feels all alone in his decision. Integrity is doing the right thing, even when it’s hard. It can be really hard to do the right thing when you're doing it by yourself. Have you ever tried to do the right thing, but ended up being all alone in your decision?

:46 Aladdin spent some time with the sultan, hoping to resolve their conflict and get on the same page with things. How comfortable are you with resolving conflict with your friends? Do you have any unresolved conflict right now with any of your friends?

:51 Jafar was tricking many people. He pretended that Aladdin was responsible for the sultan's death. He pretended to be princess Jasmine and sentenced Aladdin to a really bad punishment. Has someone ever tricked you before? How can you tell if someone might be a tricky person?

1:02 Iago was willing to sacrifice himself in order to save Aladdin. He put himself in harm's way in order to defeat Jafar. Jesus made the ultimate sacrifice for you when He died on the cross in order to pay the price for your sins. John 3:16 says, "For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life." What do you think motivated Jesus to go to the cross and give up His life? What does Jesus' sacrifice say about His love for you?
